The Delki Dozzi Community Garden in the City of Sudbury is asking for a shed. Jean and I believe that we have come up with the solution, but we’d like others to think so too!
Please support us by ‘liking’ Entry 5 by March 31! The winning entry is to be constructed this summer. Your help would be greatly appreciated!
Greater Sudbury has a deeply rooted relationship with its land. Its physical geography is defined by the Sudbury Basin, where minerals embedded in the land continues to be excavated for the mining industry. While this industry recognizes the land’s abundance in resources, it has also led to an ecological imbalance in the area. The Earth Box seeks to raise awareness of this imbalance, and reinforces the Delki Dozzi Community Garden’s goal to use education as a means to create a positive impact on the city. It employs easily accessible and found materials, and a simple construction method that allows for residents’ participation of all ages and abilities; using regionally manufactured wire-mesh components, gabion baskets are assembled and filled with rocks collected from around the city. Its modularity allows for flexible configuration and multiple applications (walls, seating, compost); the structures’ orientation gives maximum view and access around the shed.
We believe the rock-filled structure symbolizes city’s strong affinity with the earth, and that community involvement during construction is another approach to educating the public about sustainability. The Earth Box is designed with the hope that the community will recognize and reflect on the past, present, and future significance of their land.
Thank you!
